People who keep kosher may wonder what it would be like to dig into some of the best culinary offerings in town.
Come Sunday, May 2, they will not have to wonder any longer. Seven of the most trendy restaurants in Cleveland will provide sumptuous strictly kosher fare at the upcoming "A Kosher Taste of Cleveland."
This first-ever event, sponsored, created and held at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, will feature luscious meat and pareve signature dishes prepared by such great eateries as: Bossa Nova, Contempo Cuisine, Fire at Shaker Square, Hunan by the Falls, Moxie, Mustard Seed Market and Cafe, and Sergio's in University Circle.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to sample the cuisine and culture of the city we live in and teach our community it is possible that great gourmet dining can be made kosher," says Congregation Shaarey Tikvah Rabbi Edward C. Bernstein.
Bernstein will serve as mashgiach (kosher supervisor) for the event. He comes well qualified to the position. Bernstein's career as a member of the "kosher patrol" began in the kitchens at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. When he attended the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, he served as mashgiach in the seminary's cafeteria for five years.
"Everyone who attends the event should be confident that the food they are eating is kosher," says Bernstein. "I take my role as mashgiach very seriously."
And just to be doubly safe about the fare being served at Shaarey Tikvah, Bernstein consulted with Rabbi Jim Rogozen to follow his high kashrut standards for conducting the Gross Schechter School Kosher Rib Burnoff.
Committee member Diane Lavin says keeping kosher will never taste so good. "What a great opportunity to dine on dishes such as grilled beef churrasco, duck confit in a Chinese pancake, chicken breast with spinach stuffing and Brazilian rice; drink kosher wine; and enjoy great company."
Even the younger set at Shaarey Tikvah is getting into the act. Members of the USY youth group will serve as greeters, servers and bussers.
Proceeds from the 6 p.m. fund-raiser will support synagogue programming. For ticket information, call Congregation Shaarey Tikvah at 216-765-8300. Reservations are required by April 18.
