Restoring burial sites in Rome
(JTA) -- Work will begin in September to restore ancient Jewish catacombs in Rome so that tourists can visit.
Italy's culture minister said this week that the ministry had allocated $1.75 million toward restoring the Jewish catacombs located beneath Villa Torlonia, just outside Rome's city center.
Recent scientific research, published this month in the magazine Nature, indicated that the Villa Torlonia catacombs date from the first century C.E. In addition, a Jewish information and tourism office will open in the heart of the historic Rome Ghetto in October, and Rome's new Jewish Culture Museum will open Nov. 22.
