Acting Likud head joins Sharon

Published: Thursday, December 8, 2005 11:37 PM EST
(JTA) - The acting head of Israel’s Likud Party quit to join Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Tzachi Hanegbi, a Cabinet minister who took the Likud’s helm after Sharon quit last month to set up the new Kadima Party, surprised colleagues by resigning Wednesday. He said he would join Kadima to help Sharon push for peace with the Palestinians.

“My heart says Likud, but my head says Kadima,” Hanegbi told reporters. The defection was expected to further boost Sharon ahead of the March 28 general election.
