Appreciated CJN article
I appreciated the article on juvenile arthritis (JIA), “When a little limp spells big trouble” in Health Beat (CJN, March 10).
Our daughter Alexis, now 5, was diagnosed at 20 months with this debilitating disease. It took almost a year of wondering, worrying, poking and prodding until we had our answer.
Arthritis is a disease that does not discriminate by age. Over 70 million people, or one in three adults and 300,000 children in the U.S., currently battle some form of arthritis and chronic joint symptoms.
What a difference time and research can make. Had she been born 10 years earlier, “Lexi” would have had few or no treatment options. But thanks to the money raised for research by the Arthritis Foundation, new treatments like Relafen and Enbrel are now available. Because of some of these drugs, Lexi is able to take ballet and lead a relatively normal childhood.
