CJN annual meeting: Shamis takes the gavel

Gary S. Shamis became the 14th president of the Cleveland Jewish News board of directors at the paper’s 42nd annual meeting held at Landerhaven on Thurs., June 14.
“When you’re building on something that’s already great, it’s easier,” said Shamis, firm managing director of SS&G Financial Services, as he accepted the presidency. The CJN “has a fabulous foundation.”
Shamis outlined his goals for his three-year term: a graphic and layout redesign of the paper; increasing and improving the CJN’s custom publishing business; continued and increased outreach to nearby Jewish communities such as Akron, Canton and Youngstown; and most importantly, a new strategy for the CJN’s Internet presence.
He also promised the board “short and purposeful (morning) meetings that will all end by 9 a.m.”
Other officers elected at the meeting include: vice presidents Barry R. Chesler, Judi Magid Feniger and Marc W. Freimuth; secretary Gayle I. Horwitz; treasurer Deborah A. Coleman; and assistant treasurer Seth P. Briskin. Elected to three-year terms on the board were Loren S. Chylla, Lauren Rich Fine, Brian S. Gleisser, Steven S. Goykhberg, David R. Hertz II, Rabbi Shmuel Jablon, Scott Moss, Carol E. Rivchun, Dr. Paul D. Tolchinsky, and Rabbi Sruly Wolf. Elected to one-year terms were Stacy D. Friedman and Tracy A. Turoff. Outgoing board president Bruce M. Hennes was made an honorary life director.
Barry Chesler announced the formation of the CJN Foundation (CJNF), a 501(c)(3) created for the purpose of “preserving and protecting” the CJN for the Jewish community. Tax-deductible donations to the CJNF will fund three projects: creation of a digital archive of the CJN from 1964 to the present, annual summer internships for college students, and community education programs.
