In a move to get “more hands on deck” while expanding the scope of its advertising/Web/editorial and creative content, the board of directors of the Cleveland Jewish News recently appointed Michael E. Bennett to the newly created position of publisher.

Bennett, who has been working with the CJN as a consultant since April 1, will begin his new job July 9. As publisher, Bennett will coordinate both the business and editorial/ creative aspects of the CJN, said board president Gary Shamis.

The new position, Shamis noted, will allow senior management the opportunity to concentrate on specific areas of growth such as custom publishing, geographic expansion, Web strategy, and a significant redesign of the CJN.

“The need (for a publisher) was there,” maintained Shamis, named president of CJN’s board of directors on June 14. Part of Bennett’s job, he added, will be to act as a “face of the paper” in the community while “enhancing both the paper and the company.”

Bennett, 50, was hired in part for a unique résumé that includes 18 years in journalism and another decade working closely with Cleveland’s Jewish community, said Shamis. Bennett most recently worked as campaign director for the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland after eight years as Federation’s director of marketing and communications.

The Cleveland Heights resident and married father of two belongs to B’nai Jeshurun Congregation and is excited to get started in his new position. Bennett hopes he can help make the CJN more “visible” and “compelling.”

“We should continue to strive to be the main vehicle of the Jewish community,” he said. “Part of my role is helping us get there.”
