MY NAME IS: Irving Gold of Mayfield Heights
I RECOMMEND: Her Way: The Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton by Jeff Gerth and Dan Van Natta Jr. (Little, Brown and Company, 2007)
THE STORY: Hillary has a plan to be in the White House in 2008. This book details her life as a young girl, her career as a student at Wellesley, and her desire to marry Bill Clinton and put him in the White House. She succeeded right on schedule.
YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE: Gerth is a former Clevelander. The revelations of Hillary’s loneliness, her successes and her failures make his book a must-read for all voting Americans
LENGTH: 438 pages
PRICE: $29.99
MY NAME IS: Stanley Adelstein of Cleveland
I RECOMMEND: The Greek Way by Edith Hamilton (W.W. Norton and Company, 1993)
THE STORY: Hamilton is a scholar of the golden age of Greece and for many years was president of Bryn Mawr College. The book describes life in Athens 2,200 years ago.
YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE: This erudite and very readable book clearly and cogently identifies the values which made Greek society outstandin, and which, unfortunately, are frequently lacking in America today. It is a book to be savored.
LENGTH: 212 pages
PRICE: $12.95
MY NAME IS: Adrienne Greenwald of Highland Heights
I RECOMMEND: The First and Final Nightmare of Sonia Reich: A Son’s Memoir
by Howard Reich (PublicAffairs, 2006)
THE STORY: A son’s personal struggle with his mother, who suffers from late-onset PTSD (Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder). It explores the power that trauma has over the human psyche. His mother’s suppression of horrific memories of the Holocaust and her attempt to stay disassociated from her past cause severe physical and mental health issues that she cannot control, even 60 years later.
YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE: Reich offers a very revealing portrait of his childhood and of growing up in the shadows of his parents, both Holocaust survivors. It’s a very compelling and detailed look at how “survivors” really survive their experiences and how their families try to cope. A fast moving book, it will draw you in and strike a sympathetic chord in every Jew.
LENGTH: 200 pages
PRICE: $22.95
MY NAME IS: Bonnie Chisling of Beachwood
I RECOMMEND: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel by Lisa See (Random House, 2006)
THE STORY: This beautifully written story takes place in 1800s China. It details the relationship between two young girls who are paired in a unique laotong match (designed to pair potential “same” spirits) that ultimately spans a lifetime. The girls correspond in a secret language called nu shu, established exclusively for women. As the story progresses, the reader is introduced to the painful custom of footbinding, arranged marriages, and the difficult life of women in China.
YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE: The book was particularly meaningful to me since I began a pen pal relationship with a Muslim girl from Calcutta, India, some 50 years ago. We shared our life’s experiences including her arranged marriage and adjustment to a new life. The book demonstrates the importance of lifelong friendships and shared feminine bond despite differences in background and culture.
LENGTH: 288 pages
PRICE: $13.95 in paperback
MY NAME IS: Dove Kessler of Lorain
I RECOMMEND: Spoiled Rotten America: Outrages of Everyday Life by Larry Miller (Regan Books, 2006)
THE STORY: Comedian, actor and author Larry Miller offers humorous observances plus some serious thoughts on the problems of the day.
YOU SHOULD READ IT BECAUSE: You will find Miller is a proud, committed Jew, an articulate writer, and a very bright man. We all need a little levity for these trying times, and this book is not just funny; it’s smart.
LENGTH: 288 pages
PRICE: $25.95
