Marsha Gross has been painting and creating artworks at Tri-C for nearly 20 years.

She’s tried painting at home, but “it’s just not the same,” she admits.

The reason, she says, is because the creative juices flow better with her “sisterhood” beside her. Gross, Marilyn Newman and Anne Mitro have been painting together twice a week for many years. The three artists, along with Sheila Herschman, will be featured in the Beachwood Arts Council “Women 4 Art” show Dec. 8 n 23.

Gross, Newman and Mitro have wanted to have a show together. The council planned a show with Gross and Herschman, and when Gross suggested including her friends, the Council was thrilled to have the four Jewish female artists in the exhibit. “When this came up, it was a serendipity,” says Gross, who has studied art in Cleveland and New York. Her featured works will be mostly oil paintings of scenes in Europe, where she has traveled extensively. Gross is also a docent at The Cleveland Museum of Art, which she says “fuels her passion for painting.”

Newman, who graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art as a painting and textile major, does abstract work in acrylics. She says the art show will be exciting for her because her paintings will be alongside those of her friends.

Women 4 Art is Herschman’s first all-female show. “I like the idea of it,” she says. “I think it will be an interesting show.” Herschman will be exhibiting her abstract paintings, acrylic paint on canvas, which are inspired, she says, by “the endless possibilities of color, line and form.”

Mitro, who has studied art in Cleveland, New York and Florida, typically participates in juried shows; she has never had a show at a community center, making the experience “different” for her. “It’s going to be a great show, and I’m happy to be in it with my friends,” she says. Mitro’s paintings will be primarily landscapes, mostly in oils. “Much of my work is really a valentine to Cleveland, the place closest to my heart,” she says.

Ileen Kelner, co-chairperson of the Women 4 Art event and past president of the Beachwood Arts Council, is looking forward to the event. “It will be a very diverse show,” she says. “It’s going to be fun.”
