Over 2,500 members of the Jewish community enjoyed a sunny Labor Day afternoon on the grounds of Gross Schechter Day School as they devoured kosher ribs, wings, falafel, latkes, pickles, corn and more.

They were noshing at the Conservative day school’s Totally Kosher Rib Burnoff, a yearly fundraiser for student scholarships.

Youngsters also enjoyed everything from a bungee jump to a bounce house and dunk tank.

Fifteen rib grilling teams competed for the $500 grand prize. After tasting samples of ribs from each team, a group of five judges, sequestered in the school’s kitchen, cast their votes.

This year’s first place winner was Park Synagogue Men’s Club, always a popular contender. A close second went to Betar Youth Group while B’nai Jeshurun Congregation came in third. Fourth place went to Cleveland Hillel, this year’s newest grilling team. The People’s Choice award, decided by burnoff participants, was given to Michael Friedman Ganley Volkswagen, Subaru, Nero Lincoln Mercury. Siegal College and Tel Aviv University tied for first place in the first ever wing competition.

“My wife Sheila and I have been using the sweet sauce rib recipe we found on the Internet 15 years ago, and we sell out of ribs early each year,” says Park president Mitchell Balk. “As a former Schechter parent and board member, it gives me pleasure to give the grand prize money back to the school.”
