Leon M. Plevin, who co-founded Plevin & Gallucci Co. LPA in 2005, died Oct. 28 at age 76. He spent nearly 50 years at Nurenberg, Plevin, Heller & McCarthy, formerly known as Dudnik & Komito, where he began as a clerk.

Mr. Plevin, who served as managing partner of that firm for 35 years, worked on behalf of injured people as a plaintiffs’ attorney. The recipient of numerous awards, he served the Supreme Court of Ohio as a member of the board of bar examiners and held many other positions in legal and community organizations.

Mr. Plevin served on the development council of Cleveland State University and as director of CSU’s foundation. At Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, he served on committees and as president of the alumni association. He endowed the school with the Leon and Gloria Plevin Visiting Professorship.

An avid reader of history, Mr. Plevin was a member of the Shaker Heights Indoor Theatre, a monthly playreading group where he portrayed a wide variety of characters. He was an active supporter of Cleveland’s arts groups and institutions, which included raising the funds to bring the first exhibit from the Israel Museum to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The art museum made him an honorary trustee in 2008. He also served as president of the Cleveland Artists Foundation and as a trustee of the Beck Center for the Performing Arts.

Mr. Plevin, oreviously a longtime member and past president of Temple Emanu El, was a member of Kol HaLev Reconstructionist congregation. A board and then steering committee member of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations from 1984-95, he helped open Reform Judaism in Cleveland to gay and lesbian congregations. He was particularly proud of persuading the Jewish Community Federation to begin supporting Reform and Conservative religious education at a time when it only funded Orthodox schools.

Born in Steubenville, Mr. Plevin grew up in Weirton, W.Va. He attended George Washington Law School and then moved to Cleveland, where he completed his degree at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

Mr. Plevin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria; daughters Sara (Jorge) Cruz of Chicago, Mimi Plevin-Foust (Bill Foust) and Ann (Sandy) Rosenbluth; son Andrew of New York City; five grandchildren; and sister Marilyn of Rockville, Md. Contributions are suggested to the Cleveland Artists Foundation, the Cleveland Museum of Art, or the Leon and Gloria Plevin Scholarship Fund c/o Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
