J-Pop: Jewish. Pop. Culture. Cool.
By Elizabeth Weinstein
Welcome to J-Pop, in which pop culture junkie Elizabeth Weinstein will kibbitz about all things Jewish and pop culture. Start your week off right. Your water cooler will thank you.

One the hardest things about living in Cleveland is that time of year – say, oh, mid-November – when the days are suddenly shorter, the trees lose their colorful leaves, and snow begins to decorate windshields. Why not warm your spirits (and crack a smile or two) by noshing on some good ole fashioned pop culture? Here’s what’s lifting my spirits today:
There’s an interesting article in today’s NYT about the Obama campaign’s innovative use of social media to gets its message across.
Beyonce as feminist icon and inspiration for Orthodox women? Yup, you read that right. According to Elana Sztokman of The Jerusalem Post, “Beyonce Knowles may be leading a gender revolution through her music.”
According to the Plain Dealer, our very own Armond Budish has suddenly become very popular:
“The Beachwood Democrat won't grab the reins of the Ohio House until January, but as he strolled around a post-election conference in Columbus, it was clear the 55-year-old lawyer suddenly had acquired serious juice. Every few steps, someone - a lobbyist, fellow state lawmaker or government staffer - had a kind word or a hearty handshake for Budish. In fact…his newfound popularity had his cell phone so backed up that ringing him up was next to impossible.”
I’ll be out of town. ☹
But please go and tell me how it is.

- One way to warm up: indulge in Shepherd’s Pie. The Jew and The Carrot website tells you how to make three different kinds.

- Lindsay Lohan’s Jewish girlfriend, Samantha Ronson, is “shocked by gay wedding ban.”
- Over at PopJudaica.com, “Obamicas” totally outsold “McCippahs” this election season.
- Speaking of politics, if you have a vision for America, tell president-elect Obama about it at his new website, change.gov.
- It’s fitting that Obama is now using his website to help him communicate with Americans. The NYT has an interesting story on how his campaign utilized social media to win voters.
- Do you ever wish you were…happier? Join the club. And follow author Gretchen Rubin’s aptly-titled blog, The Happiness Project, where she strives to discover her personal secrets to happiness.
- If for some odd, odd reason you have not watched Natalie Portman’s viral video where she offers her solution to the global economic crisis, you can watch it here. It’s knee-deep in cuteness.
- And finally, last but not least – my very own pop culture blogger guru Whitney Matheson, of Pop Candy, reports:
This weekend, several Pop Candy readers plan to gather in Cleveland for their own pop-culture extravaganza.
"This is not only a celebration of the Pop Candy blog but also a celebration of how large the online community has grown and the strong friendships it has helped to produce," says Cleveland-based reader and event organizer BIG BUSINESS. He adds that nearly 30 readers plan to attend what they are dubbing "Midwest Candy Con '08."
Unfortunately, I won't be in Cleveland to witness the festivities -- I'm still preparing for the big move -- but I look forward to hearing all about it. They will be gathering at the Corner Alley from 6-9 p.m.
I’ll be out of town. ☹
But please go and tell me how it is.
