A weekly look at the exceptional people, events and ideas that make Cleveland a very special place.

Jason Lichtman grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., a place where, he says, “there were more cows than Jews.” After graduating from high school, he traded his bucolic surroundings for a succession of more cosmopolitan places before landing in Cleveland two months ago to clerk for federal Judge Kathleen M. O’Malley.
After earning his B.S. in economics, Lichtman had a series of management consulting jobs in Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., where he developed an interest in politics. In 2003, Lichtman spent the summer as research and policy director for Louisiana politico Mitch Landrieu, helping him with his (successful) bid to become lieutenant governor.
“Despite the title, it was not glamorous work,” says Lichtman. “But it was great experience.”
Law school was next on Lichtman’s agenda, followed by a position with Howrey LLP in D.C. A Cleveland lawyer with whom he worked encouraged him to apply for a clerkship with Judge O’Malley.
Although it was daunting to start over in a city where he knew no one, Lichtman says he really likes Cleveland.
“I’ve been networking with friends of friends,” he says. “The Let My People Know program (at the Jewish Community Federation) also has helped me tap into the community.”
Snagging “a cool apartment in Cleveland Heights” was a plus, and Lichtman, who loves to cook and describes himself as “a big wine guy,” says he’s found lots of great places here to indulge these interests. Favorites so far are Velvet Tango Room, Luxe Kitchen & Lounge and Zagara’s Marketplace.
Lichtman enjoys jogging in his new neighborhood, and come spring, he hopes to find a group of kickball players to join. But his favorite sport is skiing. He has plied the slopes in Austria, France, Canada and Aspen. So far, that’s Northeast Ohio’s one drawback – plenty of snow but no mountains.
