When Rabbi Arianna Gordon stood on the bimah at her bat mitzvah, the Detroit native was actually in training for her future career. “I knew then I wanted to become a rabbi,” she explains. “I’d been close to the rabbis in my congregation and continued to be involved in Jewish life throughout high school.”
Gordon taught Hebrew school while she was at Brandeis, and “I have always been drawn to the idea of being part of people’s lives during momentous times,” she says.
This fall, Gordon was named director of The Temple-Tifereth Israel’s religious school. “This is such a wonderful fit for me,” she enthuses. “I’m able to use my training as an educator, and I’ve already had rabbinic pulpit experience. I’m thrilled to have the on-going opportunity to interact with congregants of all ages.”
Cleveland’s Jewish community mirrors that of her hometown, but even though she has some close relatives here, it is always difficult to start fresh in a new city, Gordon admits. “Fortunately, everyone I’ve met has been welcoming and warm, and my synagogue colleagues are working hard to make sure I have a social life. The fact that everyone cares so much about me has made my transition to Cleveland easier.”
