A weekly look at the exceptional people, events and ideas that make Cleveland a very special place.

Newly minted attorney Eric Zell knows how to spend his free time. Right after he took the Ohio Bar exam this July, he packed his bags and headed for a five-week vacation to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
Zell wasn’t starting his new job with Calfee Halter & Griswold LLP’s litigation and white-collar defense and investigations group until early September. “So I decided to take off by myself and travel to locations I had only dreamt of visiting,” he says. “The trip was amazing; I met a lot of different people along the way and saw a gorgeous part of the world.”
But, Zell’s whirlwind tour did not erase his appreciation of his hometown. “I’m living downtown so I can be in the heart of the action and just a few blocks from work,” he explains. “There’s so much for a young, single person to do here. I really enjoy the Tremont, Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway areas. If you make the effort, you can have a great social life here. This is really a cool city that does not get the credit it deserves.”
Giving back to the community is also high on Zell’s list. He is a member of the New Partners Group at the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center, and he tutors and mentors students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District through the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’s 3R’s Program.
Penny and Bill Zell are happy their son moved back to town, and the feeling is mutual. “It’s nice to go over for home-cooked meals, and I enjoy playing golf with my dad,” says Zell. “I wouldn’t have that privilege if I lived out of town.”
