Name: Michael Friedman
Age: 45
Job title: General manager at Ganley Volkswagen, Ganley Subaru and Frank Nero Lincoln-Mercury, all on the Bedford auto mile
A typical day: Moving between my three dealerships, making sure that everything is running smoothly and that all employees and customers are happy. I always meet with my managers and salespeople to see if they need any help. I sign checks and put out any necessary fires.
Biggest perk: I get to drive new demo cars from any of my three dealerships. I also don’t have to pay for a car or health insurance.
Biggest drawback: Seeing good people not able to get credit from the bank. Because of the recession, banks now have more strict requirements on whom they will loan money to; there is about a 30% increase in the number of customers who do not qualify. Plus some customers who do get approved have a much higher interest rates and/or have to put a large amount of money down. Not everyone has the money to do that.
The glamorous life: I’ve won numerous vacations through my business and also have access to a company private jet. I always share this luxury with eight of my college buddies, and we take yearly trips.
The not-so-glamorous life: A lot of hours. Twice a week, I work 12-hour days. Saturdays are our busiest days, so when others are spending time with their families, I’m working at the dealerships.
Something you do that few would ever guess: I endorse between six and eight different charities a year and continuously host events at my dealerships. The charity receives $100 for every car we sell. Last month I had an animal shelter that brought in 40 dogs and 12 cats. Not only was I able to give back to the community, but we also helped get 18 of those animals adopted!
Top-secret information only general managers know: I get records every month that show me where my dealerships fall among all the other 120 dealerships in the district.
Craziest thing you’ve ever had to do at work: During one of my commercials, the theme was shaving prices off of all cars. I said I would do anything to make a deal, and I ended up shaving my beard!
Something everyone should know about general managers: Good general managers care about people and look them in the eyes. They treat everyone with respect and always have a smile on their face. That is how I run my businesses.
