Recession translates to lower JCF allocations


The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland unanimously approved allocations for the 2009/2010 fiscal year at its June 29 board of trustees meeting. For the first time in more than a decade, it is a smaller, tighter budget than the year previous, owing to the troubled economy and resulting fundraising struggles.

Local athletes head to Israel for 18th Maccabiah Games


The 18th Maccabiah Games will take place in Israel July 13-23. Sometimes referred to as the “Jewish Olympics,” the competition is held every four years in the Jewish state, drawing 7,000 athletes from over 50 countries.

Candidate John Kasich seeks to phase-out state income tax


Former U.S. Rep. John Kasich is proud of the 10-year congressional plan that resulted in a balanced federal budget, an effort the Republican from Cincinnati led as chairman of the House Budget Committee. It was 1997, the president was Democrat Bill Clinton, and in balancing the federal budget, Kasich noted, he “got a tremendous number of people who didn’t want to make changes go through the same door.”

Doctors will say this week if Demjanjuk fit to stand trial


A medical report concluding whether or not former Seven Hills resident John Demjanjuk is healthy enough to stand trial in Munich for war crimes should be released this week, say German prosecutors. He is currently being held in a Munich prison.
