Marlene Whitman will become a bat mitzvah Saturday morning, June 1, at The Temple-Tifereth Israel. Marlene is the wife of Eric Whitman and the mother of Jack, Nate, Andy and Eli. She shares that in some ways the ceremony is 37 years late, but in others it is right on time. “And now, for the first time in my 49 years, I am about to chant from the Torah,” Marlene said. “This moment, this Shehechianu moment, is reflective of my portion. I am a parent showing my children that this is important. I am a child and grandchild whose mother and grandmothers never did what I am about to do. I am standing beside and before my family and friends. And, oh, do I have empathy for the teens who have gone before me.”
