Mary Chaitoff (nee Siovits), 90, of Pepper Pike, passed away June 6, 2019.
Mary was born on Jan. 23, 1929, in Cleveland, the first American-born child of her Hungarian immigrant family. Mary was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and attended Kent State University and Cleveland State University to earn a master’s degree in education and complete her Ph.D. doctoral thesis. Mary was an English teacher at Wiley Junior High School and Clevleand Heights-University Heights High School, where she had long-term relationships with many students for decades after their graduations. Her students would call her on March 15 and repeat Shakespeare’s lines “Beware the Ides of March!”
Mary was a member of Park Synagogue and B’nai Jeshurun Congregation. She also belonged to Kol Israel Foundation and NA’AMAT USA. She enjoyed gardening, reading literature, theater and exercise. Mary was an usher at Playhouse Square and held a leadership role in the Journey of Conscience.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Harold. She was the devoted mother of Jeffrey Chaitoff (Margo Vinney), Bethany (Bruce) Salomon and Linda (Robert) Weiner; loving grandmother of Brian (Lauren) Chaitoff, Steven (Brittany Pavon Suriel) Chaitoff, Aaron (Elaine) Salomon, Jeremy (Meredith) Salomon, Rachel (Mark) Rokoff, Michelle (Jonathan) de Boer and Andrew (Tova) Weiner. Great-grandmother to Macaela, Peyton, Brayden, Aiden and Harper Salomon, Caleb and Hailey Rokoff, Vivienne and Juliette Chaitoff, Hunter and Noah de Boer, Moshe Aryeh and Yeshaya Weiner. Dear sister of the late Frieda Siovits, Sander Sanders, Eleanor Moskovitz, Lillian Bruder, Zolton, Jack and Max Siovits. Loving aunt.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, June 12 at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Road in Cleveland Heights.
Interment will be at Mount Olive Cemetery.
