Dr. Richard Allen Katzman passed away Oct. 23, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Roberta Katzman; daughters, Audrey Katzman (Tim McParland), Sharon (Brian) Siegel and Naomi (Matthew) Kall; son, Noah Katzman; sister, Judy (Irv) Aplis; and grandchildren, Melissa and Rachel Siegel, and Hannah and Lucy Kall.

A native Clevelander, he was a beloved doctor, teacher and active member of the Jewish community. He lived a dedicated Jewish life, and was a devoted father, brother, cousin, uncle and grandfather. Dick was a member of Congregation Shaarey Tikvah for 35 years, and a proud graduate of Case Western Reserve University and the University of Chicago Medical School. He also served two years as a U.S. Army physician in France.

With wide ranging interests, Dick loved sharing what we learned, often engaging friends and family in long discussions infused with lots of data and his quirky sense of humor.

After retirement, he completed a master’s degree in Jewish studies. Music was a big part of his life. He played oboe and English horn, and regularly attended Cleveland Orchestra concerts. Dick was a world traveler and especially liked to visit Jewish areas of interest. He and Roberta visited Israel 18 times.

Funeral services took place on Oct. 27, 2019, at Congregation Shaarey Tikvah. Internment was at Mount Olive Cemetery.

Friends who wish may contribute to Congregation Shaarey Tikvah or to support medical scholarships in his memory at the University of Chicago’s Gift Administration, 5235 S. Harper Court, Chicago, IL 60615.
