Sidney “Big Sid” Martel, 99, was born July 4, 1920, and passed away peacefully on July 14, 2019.
Sidney was born in Cleveland, the youngest of five children. He was a nine-letter sports hero at Cleveland Heights High School and went on to be a Little All-American football player at Ohio Northern University.
He entered the navy during World War II and served on an ammunition ship in the South Pacific. After serving in the navy, Sidney started his own home remodeling business, which he ran until his retirement in 1990. He found retirement boring and took a job at Hillcrest Hospital Cancer Center as their head valet working there into his 80s.
Sidney married Lillian Kaufman in 1947 and they have been married for over 71 years. They have two children, Laurie (Jeff) Hyer of Sheffield Village and Jeff (Judy) Martel of Maplewood, N.J. They have three grandchildren, Rachel, Erin and Joseph Martel. Sidney was predeceased by his siblings, Sylvia Scheer, Essye Licker, Edward Martel and Oscar Marcus. Sidney was the cherished uncle of Richard (Lori) Martel.
Sidney was quite a character and will be remembered as a funny, happy-go-lucky guy. To know Sidney was to love him.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. July 16 at Mount Olive Cemetery, 27855 Aurora Road in Solon.
Following services the family will receive friends until 4 p.m. July 16 at Menorah Park, 27100 Cedar Road in Beachwood.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sidney’s memory may be made to the charity of choice.
