Morton Stein, 85, of Akron, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2018, at University Hospitals, with family by his side. Beloved husband of Geraldine (nee Brown). Devoted big brother to Herbert (Sally) Stein. Loving father of Todd (Carmie) Stein, and Cheryl (Murray, of blessed memory) Shankman. Cherished grandfather (Zazie) of Michelle (Evan) Hirsch, Rachel (Ken) Weinberg, Jodi (Matt) Meridieth, Abby (Adam) Diamond, Alexa Shankman (Kevin Lipp), Hannah Shankman and David Shankman. Precious great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren. They will all miss his endless energy and infectious smile, his infinite love, devotion and visionary leadership. Mort was born in Akron on April 1, 1932, to Alex and Anna Stein. Mort graduated from East High School and then received a business degree from Kent State University.

Mort and Gerry were happily married on June 26, 1955, and enjoyed 62 loving years together.

In 1972, Mort (with his inventive entrepreneurial spirit) made the bold move to leave his steady job and start Brunswick Insurance Company. For more than 45 years, he never stopped thinking of ways to grow the business and provide more ways to protect and service his clients.

Generous with time and charitable donations, Mort was a board member of Weaver Industries, a past president of Akron’s B’nai B’rith Men’s Club, the Akron representative to the Menorah Park board of trustees, a board member of the Akron Jewish Community Center and a past campaign chair for the Akron Jewish Community Federation. Mort also served as a longtime television host for the Akron Jewish Community’s Civic Forum (Forum 360), where he interviewed many dignitaries and highlighted current events.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 3 at Revere Road Synagogue in Bath Township. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.
