Gilbert Jay Winer was born and raised in Akron to Joseph and Esther (nee Meyers) Winer. He passed away Oct. 20 at age 83.

He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in anthropology at the University of Michigan; taught college in Massachusetts and California. Later on, his professional career was spent in the planning department of Cleveland, where he developed demographic and statistical analysis of housing and other needs in underdeveloped areas which were used in the allocation of city resources and for both the development and procurement of federal grants.

His hobbies were varied – bird watching, photography, stamp and pipe collecting, classical records and an enormous collection of books. Gilbert personified humility and was never too proud to lend an ear or a willing hand. He would always greet you with a welcoming smile and a kind word.

He leaves behind his devoted sister, Ruth from Cleveland; brother, Robert from California; a niece and two nephews; and several grand-nieces and nephews. As a rock all of ages, and a force of nature, he will be greatly missed.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Winer Family Fund for Jewish Education or the Sierra Club.
