Right at Home

Garfield Heights resident Tansey Shepherd received the national Caregiving Hero award.

Shepherd has spent the last year working as a home health aide for Right at Home Cleveland, which is based in Beachwood. Rabbi Shalom Plotkin, franchisee of Right at Home Cleveland, nominated Shepherd for the award.

“The reason I specifically pointed her out was because I think she’s been super reliable and compassionate and you don’t get that all the time,” Plotkin said.

Shepherd was one of 50 people nominated across the country for the award. In addition to receiving the Caregiving Hero award, she also was named one of the top 10 caregivers in the country by ClearCare, a software company that offers office solutions for private duty home care agencies.

Shepherd said she was speechless when she learned she was receiving the award.

“I love my field. I love working with the residents and the elderly. That’s my passion. I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she said.

As a home health aide, Shepherd primarily works with one client and is responsible for all aspects of caring for her, including feeding and bathing her and spending time talking with her.

“She takes care of her client as if it’s her own family,” Plotkin said. “She’s been very diligent. Our client went from being 88 pounds and so weak that she couldn’t speak to not only having a conversation but also going to the Cleveland Museum of Art on her birthday. She’s well over 100 pounds now.”

Shepherd is the first caregiver from Right at Home Cleveland to receive this award. Plotkin said Shepherd exemplifies what Right at Home stands for.

“Our mission is to improve the quality of life for our families that we serve, one family at a time. While it’s true that we serve dozens of families every day, it really comes down to who is it that’s going to be with mom to help feed her dinner tonight?” Plotkin said.

“For this family to know that somebody who really cares about their loved one will be there, even if it takes her more than an hour to feed her, there’s going to be someone there with her. We’re only as good as who is there, right then, with that client. We rely on Tansey and she’s done just so beautifully.”
