Summa Health, Akron’s biggest hospital system and Summit County’s largest employer, is being acquired by Beaumont Health of Southfield, Mich., according to a news release.
Beaumont Health is Michigan’s largest health-care system with annual revenue of $4.7 billion, eight hospitals, and 38,000 employees, while Summa Health has $1.4 billion in revenue and about 7,000 employees, according to the release. Summa will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Beaumont.
Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro told the Akron Beacon Journal that Summa has been “a pillar of the Summit County community for decades” and the community has a vested interest in the organization’s success. “I encourage residents and patients to continue their support of this fine institution as Beaumont Health partners its services. Dr. Cliff Deveny has shown steadfast leadership in this process and I thank him for his commitment to our community.”
The arrangement will allow for continued growth and expansion for patients in both Michigan and Ohio, according to the release, and Summa Health will maintain local leadership and have a local board.
The two not-for-profit organizations plan to finalize their partnership by the end of 2019.
“Beaumont Health and Summa Health are already strong and successful health-care leaders,” Beaumont Health CEO John Fox said in the release. “By welcoming Summa into the Beaumont family, both organizations will share expertise, invest in each other and continue to thrive as the industry evolves.
“As we expand into Ohio, we will continue to invest in our Michigan employees and operations. This year, we will launch 30 new urgent care centers. Plans to build a new mental health hospital in Dearborn and three new outpatient campuses in Livonia, Lenox Township and Royal Oak (all in Michigan) are moving forward as well.”
Summa Health CEO Dr. Cliff Deveny said, “Our board believes Beaumont Health would position our leadership, physicians and employees for continued success and enhance the quality of care provided to our patients in Akron and Northeast Ohio. Before making this decision, we announced we were seeking a partner in September 2018 and received responses from multiple health care systems in Michigan as well as several in Ohio and other states. Beaumont understands and supports our commitment to the communities we serve and will invest in our future growth in Ohio.”
