The Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music’s Wind Ensemble will perform a May 4 commemorative concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at 650 Hilltop Drive in Kent.

Titled “Strong,” the concert is in commemoration of the events of May 4, 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard shot at a crowd of unarmed college students protesting against the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. military, resulting in four deaths. The wind ensemble, directed by Wendy K. Matthews, will perform with the Glauser School’s Symphony Band, directed by Kate Ferguson.

The program will explore historical events when a person stood resilient in their beliefs, including music honoring people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community and Native Americans. Some selections include “A Movement for Rosa,” “Hymn for the Lost and Living” and “Shadowcatcher.”

The concert is free and open to the public.
