Doan Brook Watershed Partnership is seeking volunteers to participate in storm drain stenciling from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in Shaker Heights. Participants will meet at Thornton Park, 3301 Warrensville Center Road.

Participants will mark curbs next to residential storm drains with “Lake Erie Starts Here.” Information about the signage will also be posted in the neighborhood. Individuals, families and organizations such as Scouts, school or religious groups, neighborhood associations and service clubs can participate.

At Thornton Park, there will be a brief demonstration and distribution of stenciling supplies before splitting into groups to stencil streets in the Doan Brook Watershed in Shaker Heights. In the event of all-day inclement weather, stenciling will be moved to Sept. 8 at the same time.

The program was created due to the high amount of contaminants that flow into local waterways and Lake Erie from storm runoff. These include used motor oil, litter, pet and yard waste, and fertilizers or pesticides from lawns. Most storm runoff does not pass through the sanitary sewer system and does not receive water treatment.
