Archie Rand

Archie Rand, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native known for his Jewish-themed painting and murals, will speak at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood Aug. 31, kicking off the fall series of the Laura & Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University.

Rand will speak about “The 613,” his book of paintings in which each page depicts one of the 613 mitzvots, or Jewish commandments. It was published last winter and has garnered rave reviews for its colorful, graphic style.

Rand has been making art for more than 50 years. His work has been displayed in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, to name just a few.

While he won’t attend, Rand also will star Sept. 7, when Samantha Baskind, professor of art history at Cleveland State University, discusses Rand’s work in a 6:30 p.m. talk and tour at The Galleries at CSU, 1307 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland.

Open to Siegal Lifelong Learning Program members only, this event will be limited to 20. The cost is $5.
